Mobile giants utilise Horsebridge Network Systems to streamline special events coverage.

October 8th, 2009

Gaining good mobile GSM and 3G coverage at special events has always been a minefield in terms of both attendance and physical geographic limitations.

Competition between mobile operators to provide the best level of service is fierce with concerts , festivals and sporting events having the potential to produce large amounts of revenue in a relatively short time period particularly from data streaming services and Apps used commonly on leading handsets such as the iphone and Blackberry.  To make the most of this a portable, flexible, robust system is needed one that can be set up quickly and easily to enable short term high capacity mobile coverage.

In the most part operators use COW’s (Cells On Wheels), these temporary sites effectively re-create the fixed mobile infrastructure commonly seen in towns and cities, allowing good mobile coverage in areas unsuited to the amount of traffic produced by one off events. Glastonbury festival is a very good example of a time limited need for intense, quality coverage. It’s an area of farmland that would not usually require a high volume system, but for four days a year it is flooded with over 300,000 potential network subscribers, using voice calling SMS, MMS and more recently web access to update their Facebook status and Tweets, live from the main stage.

It makes no sense to have a permanent infrastructure in place for this one event but equally COW’s have their limitations. These temporary sites have to be connected back to the operator’s main network to allow the transmission of voice data from point A (the event) to point B (anywhere in the world).  This link between the event and the operator network has traditionally been provided, either by microwave radio or the very expensive option of high capacity lead lines from the fixed operator, but these are not always available.

Licensed microwave radio systems are often used but have their drawbacks, the Operator has to apply for and purchase spectrum from the local radio regulator for the event which can take weeks or even months for approval. This in itself can prove expensive and inflexible but the biggest issue is the actual cost of the microwave equipment combined with the need for absolute line of sight and the narrow beam width of the systems.

Some Operators opt for leased lines but these are very difficult to source and the cost can out-way the benefits and they are reliant on fixed line competitors. The challenge for Horsebridge was to find a reliable alternative which saved money, offered flexibility and made this particular network supplier autonomous from others.

It was quickly established that by solving this backhaul ‘link’ problem, significant improvements in terms of service, coverage and cost saving could be made, and Horsebridge was contracted to find a solution that would resolve these issues.

It was recognised that both Ethernet and TDM signals had to pass over distances between 1km and 10km for voice and data traffic to reach the nearest point of presence of the mobile operator, typically the closest base station mast. To ensure the smooth transfer of voice data over the TDM channels latency needed to be below 8ms, whilst excellent clock recovery and transfer function were intrinsic to providing customers with real quality of service.

Horsebridge specialists researched numerous technologies and vendors to find the best possible combination of capacity, quality of service and cost and were so impressed with Radwin’s products they chose the company’s ‘Winlink1000’ and Radwin 2000. These point –to-point radio systems allow the transport of both Ethernet and up to 4 x E1 TDB and 16 x E1 TDM bundles, offering up to 36Mbs and 100mbs aggregated true throughput capacity respectively.

This product can operate in areas of near Line of Sight and in some instances even Non Line of sight environments. This is key to the success of this particular solution as it offers a much wider range of flexibility. By utilising a flexible, lite, license system the solution also avoids the issues associated with licensed microwave systems. The solutions Horsebridge devised can lead to a rapid ROI for the operator, in some instances within 20 minutes of change over.

The success of this solution is evident in the very fact that the UK’s two largest mobile network operators are now utilising it. Anyone who has sent a picture message, or made a call from a major sporting event, concert or festival similar large public gathering it’s likely to have been enabled and transported over a technology solution provided by Horsebridge.

Horsebridge Network Systems portfolio covers a range of legacy and next generation technologies including fixed and wireless, core to edge synchronisation and timing; network management and network planning tools.

Highly trained staff deliver a full end-to-end service ranging from consultation, design, installation, training, customer care and maintenance.

MoD chooses Horsebridge to deliver mission critical communications system in Afghanistan

June 18, 2009

There are times when fast, accurate communications solutions really are a matter of life and death.  So when an urgent operational task was given to the MoD’s Deployed Solutions Team, via theatre staff serving in Afghanistan, it was critical that a quick resolution was found. Communications specialist Horsebridge Network Systems was able to respond immediately with a programme of solutions.

The initial requirement was to replace the satellite system which had, until now, provided all communication links between the various bases. This system had become increasingly overloaded and was no longer able to deal with the amount of traffic, or level of service required.

It was vital that an efficient, robust solution with the ability to deliver Ethernet and E1 DLOS radio traffic on a compact integrated unit was sourced at very short notice. With this in mind Horsebridge offered the option of four, encrypted, DLOS Radio Links, from company partners Radwin, alongside expert network design, a network management system and high gain antennas.

The entire system had to be subjected to full ‘Proof of Concept’ testing prior to deployment to ensure it met operational requirements and guaranteed the system availability levels originally stipulated by the MoD.

Major Lee Hawkes, who was responsible for delivering the Horsebridge elements of the urgent operation requirement, explains “I had to produce a study into all the possible options before handing the final decision over to the Deployed Solutions staff in Afghanistan. Horsebridge meet all our requirements, without additional modification or equipment. The team was extremely helpful in answering our questions and putting together a solution within a very short time frame.”

Horsebridge Network Systems has extensive experience in providing effective answers to complex service issues and is adept at working to very specific deadlines under the strictest of guidelines. The company’s ability for rapid response and turnaround makes it a major player in a field occupied mainly, by much larger organisations.

“Our autonomy gives us a significant advantage in this sector” explains Managing Director, Geoff Smith “When urgent requirements come in, we can react quickly and efficiently with a solution. In any business or organisation, whether in the private or public sector, time really is everything. If your communications fail you can be losing money or more importantly, when working with the emergency services or armed forces maybe even lives.”

Horsebridge has provided the MoD with a flexible and affordable solution which significantly improves the capacity and capability of existing networks, whilst expanding the previously limited bandwidth, tenfold. Horsebridge also includes training prior to troop deployment and rotation and provides troops, in theatre, with remote technical support for the equipment from its UK based 24x7 support centre.
Work for the MoD carries with it very specific challenges. All products need security accreditation and all work is subject to rigorous checks and balances throughout the project.

Horsebridge Network Systems portfolio covers a range of legacy and next generation technologies including fixed and wireless, core to edge synchronisation and timing; network management and network planning tools.  Highly trained staff deliver a full end-to-end service, ranging from consultation, design, installation, training, customer care and maintenance.

ECI Telecom Named as the Leading Vendor in Packet-Optical Transport Systems

January 12, 2009

Horsebridge supplier ECI Telecom, global provider of networking infrastructure solutions optimized for next-generation network migration, announced today that Heavy Reading has recognized ECI as the leading vendor in the report, “Packet-Enabled Optical Networking Quarterly Market Tracker, Q3 2008,” which tracks the newly defined packet-optical transport system (P-OTS)  product category. ECI captured leadership in this segment for the past three quarters.

“The P-OTS segment is growing at a significantly faster rate than the overall optical transport market, as carriers understand the intrinsic benefits of such a converged solution. ECI has been a pioneer in packet-optical transport systems and has achieved leadership with the XDM platform. Suppliers, such as ECI, that are evolving their optical transport product lines for the packet future will be best-positioned to help carriers worldwide as they migrate their networks from circuit to packet,” said Sterling Perrin, Senior Analyst at Heavy Reading, and author of the Packet-Enabled Optical Networking Quarterly Tracker.

P-OTS refers to the combination of connection-oriented Ethernet, SDH/SONET, and WDM ROADM capabilities, all integrated in one converged platform.  Such platforms bring significant capital expenditure and operating cost reduction to carriers evolving from legacy TDM services to next-generation packet and optical services because this approach implements fewer platforms, less manpower, less power consumption and simplified management.  ECI’s P-OTS solution is based on the XDM® Multi-Service Transport Platform (MSTP), which integrates WDM, SDH/Sonet and packet capabilities such as Carrier Ethernet.  The XDM is managed by ECI's LightSoft® network management system which is unique in its ability to provide a complete view of the network from the physical connection through the network layers.   This ability to manage multiple layers in the network from one management tool is a cornerstone of ECI's 1Net strategy for managing transitions in network evolution.

“We always strive to stay at the forefront of technological advances and are honoured to be recognized as the leading vendor in the P-OTS market. The integration of MPLS, DWDM, ROADM and SONET/SDH functionality in one platform is one of the key differentiators of ECI’s XDM. With its flexibility and architectural agility, the XDM solution allows carriers to migrate at their own pace  by investing only where and when economically justified,” said Eyal Shaked, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Network Solutions Division, of ECI Telecom.

“The strength of ECI as a partner in both the products that it supplies and its professional and progressive approach to continued development and market awareness is key to Horsebridge” said Geoff Smith, Senior Partner at Horsebridge “This latest independent recognition for their products underlines to our customers the strength of the solutions we provide in which we use  ECI products”
