Circuit Emulation/Pseudo-Wire Backhaul - TDM/ISDN over IP

Circuit emulation products from Horsebridge - Supporting Contsant Bit Rate services over packet transport networksHorsebridge products for backhaul, TDM over IP and ISDN over IP telecommunications equipment from Patapsco provide a vital migratory component for the move from TDM to Packet Networks.

The TDM units are designed to allow other types of traffic, including legacy synchronous systems, to make a simple migration to IP whilst retaining the proven installed DTE equipment and applications, but benefiting from an IP-based architecture.

Typical examples of this kind of equipment would be TDMs, mobile phone BTS cells. In fact most equipment with a T1/E1 full or fractional presentation, X.21 and V.35 devices or any unit that uses traditional leased lines.

Called Pseudo-Wires, TDM over IP or CESoIP (Circuit Emulation Services over IP), PacketBand delivers high-quality synchronous clocked services to all kinds of TDM over IP application, including voice where quality maybe a critical factor.

The ISDN over IP models within the PacketBand range support dynamically switched clock-locked ISDN clear-channel calls across and through IP networks. Any ISDN device in the world can be accessed via PacketBand.

Clear-channel ISDN over IP at customer sites is a new service pioneered by Patapsco. It opens the way for dial-up data services, such as videoconferencing, secure phones, G4 fax, encryptors, codecs, batch transfer, backup etc, to take advantage of low-cost IP networks.

The difference between a VoIP unit and PacketBand-ISDN is PacketBand delivers non-compressed ISDN "B" channels and these are clock-locked to the remote ISDN network. This means any ISDN equipment can use the service and because everything is synchronised, ISDN devices on the Packet Network can "break-out" into the real ISDN network by using a PacketBnad-ISDN as a "gateway", and they can also receive calls.

PacketBand can be a powerful tool to aid carriers who are "sun-setting" ISDN services. PacketBand can be supplied as an alternative delivery of ISDN over packet networks, yet still have all of the characteristics of the traditional exchange-delivered service.

Patapsco PacketBand range typical applications

PacketBand TDM-1 & TDM 4G

Patapsco PacketBand TDm-1 and TDM-4G - Class leading Pseudo Wire clock recoveryPacketBand-TDM-1 and TDM-4G use the latest technologies, systems and standards to deliver to the DTE equipment T1 and/or E1 full or fractional "leased lines" over a Packet Network.

The PacketBand-TDM-G Range supports up to 4 TDM presentations.

  • TDM-1 - Single port TDM over IP E1/T1 platform
  • TDM-4G - Up to 4 E1/T1 or fractional TDM over IP E1/T1 platform

The accuracy of clocks and clock recovery for the E1 and T1 circuits is at the very heart of the PacketBand range. Some applications, such as mobile cellular backhaul, require the clocks to be particularly accurate for and T1 and E1 over IP services and the PacketBand, provide excellent jitter handling capabilities and robust clock recovery systems should there be any problem on the Packet Network.

Able to deliver 1-4 T1/E1 full or fractional (structured) services, the PacketBand has a number of field-upgrade options together with Patapsco's carrier-proven and established DBManager system which provides remote access and a network-wide view of all PacketBands and the links between them.

The products are quick and easily install, with local and remote configuration options and centralised and distributed control and visibility of the whole network.

PacketBand - Primary Rate ISDN

Patapsco PacketBand ISDN-P - Class leading Pseudo Wire clock recoveryThe PacketBand-ISDN units provide PRI connectivity for transparent clock-locked "B" channels across ethernet and IP networks. Any type of ISDN traffic can use PacketBand and it is particularly useful for data transfer where the equipment needs to run in a clocked or synchronous environment.

The PacketBand-ISDN-P Range supports up to 4 BRI presentations.

  • PacketBand-ISDN-4P up to 4 PRI interfaces
  • PacketBand-ISDN-1P has a single BRI interface

The PacketBand-ISDN-1P is based on the same architecture and design as the PacketBand-ISDN-4 , but supports just a single T1/E1 PRI.

Please note that the PacketBand-ISDN-4P can be purchased with a single PRI interface enabled with the ability to remotely upgrade to more.

The key differences are that the single port PacketBand-ISDN-1P unit is slightly lower cost than the starter model ISDN-4P with a single PRI enabled. The PacketBand-ISDN-4P also supports non-switched TDM over IP point-to-point Pseudo-Wires as well

PacketBand ISDN-BRI
1 to 8 (NT or TE) ports for Basic Rate ISDN over I P

Patapsco PacketBand ISDN-b - Class leading Pseudo Wire clock recoveryClear-channel Basic Rate ISDN switched calls for BRI over Packet Networks. Deliver uncompressed clock locked channels for data and voice applications.

The PacketBand-ISDN-B Range supports up to 8 BRI presentations.

  • PacketBand-ISDN-8B up to 8BRI interfaces
  • PacketBand-ISDN-4B up to 4BRI interfaces
  • PacketBand-ISDN-1B has a single BRI interface

The unit’s BRI ports are available as “NT” (looks like a network and connect to local ISDN devices) and
“TE” (looks like ISDN devices and connects to an ISDN network) in a number of combinations.
The NT interfaces typically connect to local ISDN BRI devices whereas the TE presentation is normally to a “real” ISDN network. PacketBand access to the real ISDN network means devices on the Packet Network can use this“gateway” to dial equipment anywhere in the world via ISDN. Equally, remote ISDN equipment can, with the correct authorisation, dial into equipment across the Packet Network.

Able to recover clocks very accurately across the Packet Network, PacketBand delivers a very stable clock to attached devices. In effect, all attached devices are locked to a common clock and all are clocked very accurately with no slips or packet loss due to clocks or PacketBand.

The clock synchronisation means accurate communications across the Packet Network enabling all types of ISDN equipment to communicate reliably and also makes the ISDN break-in/out possible.
Devices and applications that need to work in a synchronous environment will work successfully with
PacketBand. This includes encryptors, codecs, video and secure phones.

The PacketBand will dynamically place calls across/through the Packet Network in response to dialing by the ISDN terminal equipment. Calls to different locations can be made simultaneously, and any
combination of out-going and in-coming calls. Calls can be placed via internal routing tables (with Primary/ Secondary/tertiary options for resilience) or using a recently released SIP server option which centralises all routing and configuration.

PacketBand also supports advanced features such as number translation/manipulation. The unit inter-works with other PacketBand products, not only ISDN versions, but uniquely PacketBand can inter-connect dissimilar devices so, for example, a BRI device can connect via PacketBand, across and IP network to a V.35 piece of equipment.

Key features:

  • Clock-recovered capabilities like all PacketBands
  • Suitable for all types of data, including synchronous
  • Inter-works with other members of the PacketBand family
  • Up to 8 BRIs supporting “S” 4-wire NT presentation dependant upon model
  • Support for ETSI (Euro) and ANSI (USA) protocols
  • Conversion between ANSI and ETSI
  • Tone generation
  • Number translation/conversion options
  • Separate ISDN “B” channels can call different destinations
  • In-coming/out-going calls in either direction
