Radio Access Network Management
We approached Horsebridge with a requirement to deliver a bespoke network management solution to monitor our 6,500 radio links. We had found that capital expenditure was being wasted on equipment replacement and engineer visits and we wanted to ensure that we were delivering the highest possible quality of service to the customer. With cost as the influencing factor, we were keen to utilise our existing resources as far as possible, which included craft application and DCN connectivity.
Solution:
Horsebridge’s Espy backhaul manager software was initially implemented across 100 of our radio links. The software is capable of managing our multiple types of radio equipment, irrespective of the vendor and there is no need for any additional hardware. The software’s remote management capabilities enabled us to pick up radio faults before they occurred. Monitoring of signal strength made it possible to identify a loss in power of transmission and predict when radios were about to fail.
This then enabled us to prioritise engineering visits and just as importantly, engineers were able to minimise spares as they were aware of exactly what the fault was prior to their visit. With 6,500 radios on 1,100 sites equipment replacement costs have a significant impact on our overall capex. The Espy backhaul manager’s performance monitoring and remote management capabilities will contribute to an extension of our radios’ life-cycle, thereby generating a more significant return on our initial investment.
Results:
The Espy backhaul manager has been implemented across our radio access network the results have been impressive:
- 75 percent reduction in engineer to site costs
- 80 percent reduction in spares management
- Improvement in our quality of service to our customers thanks to early identification of faults
- Reduction in capex due to extension of equipment life-cycle
- Critical errors identified and repaired in network
- Return on investment in under one year
Thanks to these deliverables we have rolled out the Espy backhaul manager across all of our 1,100 sites.
